Cooking is priced from an explicit 26-item shopping list at Krónan shelf prices, with no allowance added for waste; eating out from 41 restaurant menu prices. The median restaurant main in Reykjavík and Vík was 4,690 ISK.

Keeping it down

Shop at Bónus, Krónan or Nettó. Airport, gas-station and convenience-store food costs more.
Make lunch the meal you eat out: many restaurants run a lunch offer or a soup of the day, cheaper than dinner.
Drink the tap water — it is excellent almost everywhere.
Drinks add up fast: a beer is typically 1,200–2,000 ISK. Supermarket shelves carry only light beer; the state Vínbúðin shops keep short hours and close on Sundays.
